Extracts from 21st COU Hon. Chancellor's Speech
"Distinguished guests, faculty, students, and friends,
It is my pleasure to be here with you to witness the launch of "Indian Knowledge System: Foundations and Philosophical Roots". This book represents a significant milestone in our journey to explore and celebrate the richness of Indian intellectual traditions.
The Indian Knowledge System is a treasure trove of wisdom, spanning thousands of years of inquiry into philosophy, science, ethics, and arts. It offers a holistic worldview that integrates knowledge with life, ethics, and spiritual inquiry. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of IKS, highlighting its relevance in contemporary contexts.
As we navigate complex global challenges, IKS offers valuable perspectives on holistic education, ethical leadership, environmental stewardship, and wellbeing. Its emphasis on ethics, sustainability, and integrative thinking makes it a living tradition capable of informing modern thought and practice.
The book explores the classical sources of knowledge, including the Vedas, Upanishads, Smritis, and Shastras, alongside the philosophical schools or Darshanas. It delves into epistemology, ethics, cosmology, and the integration of science and arts, showcasing the seamless blend of the material and spiritual.
India's rich heritage has inspired many visionaries, including Mahatma Gandhi, who led the country to independence on August 15, 1947. His ideals of non-violence, simplicity, and self-reliance continue to shape India's path. The country's struggle for freedom was marked by significant events like the Salt March, the Quit India Movement, and the contributions of leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
India is home to diverse cultures, languages, and traditions. With over 22 languages and 1,600 dialects, India's linguistic heritage is unparalleled. The country's contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and medicine are well-known. The concept of zero, developed by Aryabhata, revolutionized mathematics. Sushruta's work on surgery and Charaka's contributions to Ayurveda are still studied globally.
Today, as India strides forward in the 21st century, its ancient wisdom offers valuable lessons for the world. The country's focus on sustainable development, innovation, and inclusivity is reflected in initiatives like "Make in India" and "Digital India".
I'd like to highlight the book's unique approach – it's not just about understanding IKS, but also about applying its principles to contemporary issues. The authors demonstrate how IKS can inform our decisions on sustainability, social justice, and personal growth.
As Chancellor of 21st Century Open University, I'm proud to see this work emerge from our community. It's a testament to our commitment to interdisciplinary studies and exploring diverse knowledge systems.
I hope this book inspires a renewed engagement with the wisdom of India, fostering learning, reflection, and ethical action. Let us celebrate this milestone and continue to explore the richness of IKS.
In the words of the authors, "IKS continues to offer profound insights for both personal development and societal progress." Let us embrace this wisdom and shape a better future.
