21st Century Open University and University of Abuja Signs a Landmark Partnership to Advance Global Education and Research

University of Abuja was established via the University of Abuja Act,  no. 106, 1992, now University of Abuja Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (as amended). UNIABUJA is a dual-mode federal university serving Nigeria’s capital with a mandate for teaching, research, and community service across diverse disciplines.

The agreement was signed on April 20, 2026 by Dr. Robert Roberto Maurice, Chancellor of 21st COU, and Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, Vice-Chancellor of UNIABUJA.

This strategic partnership establishes a  framework for academic excellence, innovation, and cultural exchange between the United States and Nigeria, with impact across Africa and beyond.


Partnership Highlights

The agreement creates immediate pathways for collaboration in priority areas including:

1. Joint Research & Development

   Both institutions will co-lead research projects, publications, and grant applications in STEAM, health sciences, and social sciences to address pressing global challenges.

2. Global Conferences & Knowledge Sharing

   UNIABUJA and 21st COU will co-host international conferences, seminars, and workshops with 21st COU’s global partner network, creating new platforms for scholars across continents.

3. Faculty & Student Mobility

   The agreement enables academic exchanges, joint supervision of research, and new opportunities for students and faculty to gain international experience and credentials.

4. Capacity Building

   Joint workshops and training programs will strengthen faculty and staff expertise, ensuring both institutions remain at the forefront of 21st century education.


The collaboration will be guided by a Joint Steering Committee with representatives from both universities to ensure accountability, revenue transparency, and mutual benefit.


A Foundation for the Future

The agreement recognizes both institutions as autonomous, self-governing entities committed to advancing their statutory missions through global cooperation. Intellectual property from joint initiatives will be co-owned and co-managed, fostering true partnership.
